Home Family: Mark Steines Fired for Accusing EP of Sexual Harassment

The morning show, which paused production twice amid the COVID-19 pandemic, is set to resume filming at the end of March. Now Variety has learned exclusively that that batch of episodes will be its last. Back in May when Steines’ termination took place, speculation about misconduct took place in the midst of the #MeToo Movement.

When two of Steines’ female coworkers accused Fraser of sexual harassment he says he provided “truthful information” to their lawyer Lisa Bloom, who is representing him in his current case against the company. Yet, in late October, another legal action hit the LASC docket as former Home & Familyfood stylist and chefShanti Hinojoshit Crown Media with a wrongful-termination and harassment suit of her own. A lawsuit that gave another POV on the tale Steines told but with very similar narrative.

Steines’ lawsuit said that he passed along complaints from cast and crew to executives, including a photo showing an instance of harassment. He has been an amazing friend to all of us here at Hallmark Channel, the cast, the crew and a wonderful friend to all of you at home as well. And we are grateful to Mark, and we want to thank him from the bottom of our hearts for six of the most incredible years that he has had here hosting this incredible show that, he helped build. Former Home & Family co-host Mark Steines, who was fired from the Hallmark Channel lifestyle series in May, is suing the network for retaliation and wrongful termination. Another person involved with the series also filed a lawsuit shortly after Steines. When Steines left Home & Family in 2018, The Hallmark Channel released a statement about his departure, USA Today reported.

Hallmark Channel’s Daytime Emmy-nominated lifestyle series Home & Family is coming to an end in August after the current ninth season, Deadline has confirmed. “The 9th and current season of Home & Family will be the series’ last,” a spokesperson for Hallmark Channel told Deadline in a statement. Steines, 54, made his first post-Hallmark TV appearance as a guest co-anchor on an episode of “Extra,” last week. As for Ferrare, she now runs her lifestyle blog and is working on a new cookbook that’s set to be released later this year. There has been a lot of mystery surrounding host Mark Steines' departure from Hallmark Channel's morning talk show Home & Family.

Debbie Matenopoulos

Today, co-host Mark Steines made a quick announcement that Ferrare had left the show and that Matenopoulos would be replacing her, effective immediately. Ferrare hadn't been on the show for two weeks and didn't return for a send-off. In a series of legal documents obtained by our sister siteVariety, Steines’ lawsuit details a pattern of abusive behavior carried out by Home & Family executive producer Woody Fraser. According to the documents, Fraser was verbally abusive and sexually inappropriate on the set of the series, particularly when it came to female staffers and guests on the show. The Home & Family host is expecting her first child with husband Jon Falcone, E!

Neither the plaintiff nor the defendant made a public statement explaining why they requested the case be dismissed. One of Steines’ attorneys was removed from the case for conflict of interest in January 2019, Law360 reported. The Bloom Firm was disqualified by the judge from representing Steines because the firm had a previous legal consulting agreement with Crown Media. In his lawsuit, Steine’s attorneys said that after he was a witness for one woman’s complaints, he was not invited to introduce a Television Critics Association event, like he had five previous times. He said his voiceover work was then terminated, he was given a pay cut, and his contract was ultimately ended.

Mark Steines Abruptly and Mysteriously Leaves Job Co-Hosting Hallmark’s ‘Home & Family’

The network announced Thursday night that the host of six years wouldn't be returning to the show — the same day his last episode aired. Mark Steines was once the host of Hallmark’sHome & Familybefore Cameron Mathison took over in his place. Crown Media denied the allegations and the lawsuit was later dismissed in January 2020. This isn’t the first time that a Home & Family co-host has been suddenly dropped from the program’s “family”. Matenopoulos’ predecessor, Cristina Ferrare, was quietly removed from the program nearly two years ago.

The case was dismissed with prejudice on January 9, 2020, and both sides agreed to pay their own legal fees. The court noted that the decision was made “based on the joint stipulation to dismiss action… of the parties.” A joint stipulation means that all parties involved agreed to dismiss the case. You can see a portion of the parties’ request to dismiss the case in the screenshot above.

This is Matenopoulos’ second marriage; she was previously married to music exec Jay Faires for five years. As for Crown Media, they responded with their own statement, despite not having received Steines’ lawsuit yet. “There is no merit to the legal claims Mr. Steines is asserting against Crown Media.

Though her vague speech provided no details about why Steines was released from the program, Matenopoulos spoke highly of her former co-host. "Iron Man 2" Randy's Donuts is already an iconic landmark in L.A., but now it's even the home of the birth of the Avengers? "Iron Man 2" maybe doesn't hold up all that well, but this donut shop scene still hits the sweet spot.

‘Home and Family’: The Real Reason Mark Steines Was Fired From the Popular Hallmark Channel Daytime Show

She had theoretically been on vacation for two weeks before it was announced that she was simply no longer with the program. This led many viewers to assume that Ferrare was sick and led to a lot of hard feelings from viewers toward her replacement. “These factual allegations plausibly allege a breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing,” adds Judge Carney in what becomes variations on a theme in today’s document.

His last Instagram post showed him and his Home & Family co-stars honoring Memorial Day, and his last Twitter post plugged an interview in which he dispenses career advice. Cristina Ferrare’s last full season of co-hosting Hallmark Channel’s “Home & Family” with Mark Steines was Season 3. Cristina Ferrare, who hosted Hallmark Channel’s “Home & Family” from 2012 until she was let go in 2016, recently felt a sense of déjà vu when her former co-host on the series, Mark Steines, was fired at the end of May. On Friday, the Hallmark Channel responded to a fan on Twitter who questioned why Steines was no longer hosting Home & Family. Steines found out he wouldn't be returning as host of "Home & Family" the day before his last episode aired. It was left to Steines’ co-host, Debbie Matenopoulos, to break the news to viewers.
